What Does the Gut Have to do with your Mood?

We have all been in a bad mood before, and it can be very frustrating to feel mad, crabby, and annoyed for seemingly no reason. Most people associate our mood and temperament with the brain, and understand how different chemicals can affect how we feel. However, few people know that our gut health actually plays a crucial role in our mood as well.

Our gut is filled with millions of microorganisms that influence our overall health, and if this gut bacteria becomes unbalanced, it can wreak havoc on our bodies, minds, and mood. Many scientists consider our gut to actually be our second brain, and both the brain and gut have a strong connection and dependence on each other. Most people know that stress, depression, and anxiety are strongly influenced by serotonin, but they naturally assume that this chemical is only created in the brain. In reality, the majority of serotonin is actually created in the gut, and imbalances of gut bacteria can cause severe problems in our mood and emotional health. Ideally, we would like an 85% good bacteria to 15% bad bacteria balance of gut bacteria in order to keep our bodies and minds functioning properly. Unfortunately, our society’s heavily processed diets, over reliance on antibiotics, lack of nutritional foods, and sedentary lifestyles cause devastating imbalances of gut bacteria. These imbalances have serious negative effects on our moods, and many more health problems. When our gut is imbalanced, our brain and rest of the body follows, so it is very important to fix these imbalance problems. Many behaviors result in the death of the good bacteria in our gut, and this helps the bad bacteria thrive and take over. The best way to combat this is to help introduce more good bacteria to the body. You can do this by eating more cultured and fermented foods, or adding probiotics to your body. Also, try to eat less chemically filled and processed foods.

Our gut health and bacteria balance plays a crucial role in our mood and overall health. It is very important we take charge of the situation, and make sure our gut is properly balanced and healthy. Many people would be shocked at how much better they feel both emotionally and physically if they took better care of their inner stomach health.
